ROCK SHOX - BOXXER WORLD CUP
行程:203mm
重量:2.67kg
Since its debut way back in '98, the Rock Shox Boxxer has had a stranglehold on the DH fork market. Show up to any downhill race, from a World Cup to a local event, and the most popular fork will be the Boxxer. Despite the fact that many people complained about how simple the internals were, the previous models of the Boxxer were always the benchmark upon which other downhill forks were compared. Since SRAM purchased Rock Shox, their whole line of forks has been changing as they have been adding newer technology. Despite adding an extra inch of travel in 05, the old Boxxer internals needed a shake up. Enter the 2006 World Cup. Rock Shox completely redesigned this fork, but there is no need to be wary of purchasing a first year product. This fork has been in the works for quite some time now and has been raced by top pros in the Black Box program since summer of '04. In fact the top 3 in the World Cup overall standings in 2004, that is two years ago, were running prototypes of this fork. In addition to this, many racers competed the entire 2005 season with the new Air Boxxer bolted onto their bikes.
Weight - With the launch of the new Air Boxxer World Cup, Rock Shox has smashed its competition in terms of fork weight. Previous to this fork, the 7 pound mark was thought to be pretty light for an 8" travel fork. The new Boxxers shatter this weighing in at a scant 6.1 lbs (2766g claimed weight with 200mm steerer tube). On top of that, the new top crowns are designed with the International Standard mount for bolt on stems. This means that you can save even more weight by mounting on an integrated stem.
Adjustability - In the past, the stock springs were too stiff for many riders and the external adjusters provided a fairly narrow range of adjustments. Much time was also spent testing out different weights and volumes of oil. With the new Boxxer World Cup, instead of needing to play with springs, the fork uses an air cartridge. This allows easy adjustment and infinite tuning possibilities. Furthermore, the range of the low speed compression and rebound make a significant difference to how the fork functions. Another new addition is the external gate adjustment which allows the pedal platform to be adjusted on the fly. By turning to full compression damping and gate, the fork is essentially locked out, creating a very nice feature for the free riders who pedal up for their decents. The sum of all of these changes is a fork that is quickly and easily tuneable.
(Word of advice: The little red rebound adjuster knob is nice, but if you ride with it on you stand a good chance of it falling off. Once you set the rebound levels where you want them, take it of and keep it in the toolbox. If you do happen to lose it, a standard allen key will work just as was required with all the old boxers.)
The Ride - So a light weight and tuneable fork sounds great, but how does the Boxxer fare on the trail? Rock Shox ships every Boxxer World Cup with a sticker on the lowers which provides suggested air pressure based on the riders weight. Although we started at the recomended level, we quickly found that we preferred the fork when run with slightly less pressure. Getting the fork dialed took a morning of tinkering with different pressures, rebound and compression settings. Once set, it was time to see what this thing could do. Having ridden many Boxxers, the new World Cup felt very predictable. My attention quickly shifted from the fork back to riding. The new Boxxer World Cup was able to be set up smoother than previous forks for the small stuff yet ramp up enough that it didn't dive too much on hard hits.
Maintenance - The Air Boxxer is the product of the Black Box program and is truly a race-bred product. As such, it requires routine maintenance. The o-rings need to be replaced regularly in order to keep the fork running smoothly as the rubber breaks down over time. It is also important to take out the stanctions and lube the seals regularily to keep things running smoothly. If your fork starts feeling harsh on the little stuff, then it is likely that it needs an overhaul. Rock Shox provides detailed service manuals on their website.
Value - Although the retail price of the Boxxer World Cup is still over $2000, each year Rock Shox seems to be making the Boxxers more affordable, and this model features far more bang for the buck than any of the previous World Cup models. Yeah, the Boxxers are pricey, but definitely in the right ballpark for a fork of this performance level.
